Every morning, I wake up so thankful for the spaces I've found in New York. My apartment is the coziest little nest in a neighborhood where I feel safe. Every morning, when I walk to my train, I see the same people in the same places, which I'm told is rare in Brooklyn these days. Maybe it's because I was born in one, but I seem to be drawn toward these unassuming corners of the world where time moves more slowly. Maine and Cayucos were like this too. And now, I've somehow found a sister version of them nestled inside one of the fastest paced environments on Planet Earth.
And you know what's wild? The apartment I live in came through my community in Cayucos. (Thank you, Stephanie!) Through a friend, through a friend, through a friend, sight unseen, my need for an affordable place to live in Brooklyn traveled across the country and reached the right ear. And now I pay my hard-earned NYC rent to the woman who grew up in this 100+ year-old skinny little brownstone. Her 97-year-old dad lives downstairs and takes the trash out every Wednesday. And if the bins are still out when I get home, I bring them back in.
When I showed up in Cayucos, CA six years ago, things fell into place in a way that made me think: This is so different from where I came from but, I'm supposed to be here.
And now when I roll empty trash bins off the sidewalk on a Wednesday evening and latch the gate behind me, while somewhere off in the near distance... a constantly evolving collective of people is making, breaking, and breathing in unison, I think the same thing: This is different than what I'm used to, but I'm supposed to be here.
And so I work to stay.
